
Established in 1857 by an Act of the Legislative Council of India, the University of Madras (UOM), located in Chennai, is a co-ed state university. With a student enrollment exceeding forty-one thousand and a faculty count of over 250, UOM has received approval from the UGC and an ‘A’ grade from NAAC. In the NIRF rankings, UOM secured the 28th position in the university category for 2021 and the 22nd position in the 2020 rankings. In the overall category, it ranked 47th in the NIRF rankings of 2021.
The University of Madras offers 165 courses at three different levels: diploma, postgraduate (PG), and post-PG. These courses encompass various specializations. The placement activities at Madras University are managed by the University Student Advisory Bureau (USAB). Admissions
Admission to the University of Madras is available for a wide range of 165 courses. The university offers admissions to diploma, postgraduate (PG), and post-PG courses. The admission process varies depending on the course and can be based on either the previous qualifying examination or entrance exams conducted by the University of Madras.
For the M.A course, admission can be based on either entrance exams or merit in the qualifying examination. Diploma courses, PG Diploma courses, one M.Sc course, and the M.Lib.I.Sc course admit students solely based on their marks in the qualifying examination.
However, for all other PG and post-PG courses, admission is primarily determined by entrance exams conducted by the university. It is important to note that while entrance exam scores are considered, the marks obtained in the qualifying examination also play a significant role in securing admission to the University of Madras.
Placements
The University of Madras has a dedicated placement department known as the University Students Advisory Bureau (USAB) to facilitate placements and provide training to students. USAB takes on the responsibility of ensuring that students receive the necessary training and guidance to secure their desired job placements. Career counseling is provided by the director of USAB, who assists students in making informed career choices.
The University of Madras focuses on enhancing students’ employability by providing comprehensive training, including the development of soft skills. This training aims to equip students with the necessary skills and qualities sought by reputable companies. Moreover, the placement officers of Madras University’s affiliated colleges undergo training in collaboration with professionals from the corporate world.
Students registered with USAB have the opportunity to be temporarily placed in government, private organizations, and public sector undertakings (PSUs). USAB actively works towards creating placement opportunities for students in various sectors.
