Since its establishment in July 1914 as the Madras Women’s College by the Government of Madras, Queen Mary’s College in Chennai has been a pioneer in women’s education. Initially, the college had a modest intake of 33 students and was located in a building known as ‘Capper House’. However, in 1915, the college expanded its premises when the government annexed the surrounding area.
At first, Queen Mary’s College offered only Intermediate courses. It wasn’t until 1916 that undergraduate courses in History and Economics were introduced. Over time, the college also introduced Intermediate courses in subjects like Geography, Indian Music, Physics, Chemistry, and Home Science.
Queen Mary’s College, Chennai operates under the governance of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. It is under the control of the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Higher Education Department, located at EVK Sampath Maaligai, Chennai 600006.
