Established in 2006, the National Institute of Design Bangalore introduced the programs Design for Digital Experience and Design for Retail Experience in 2008. It was formed as a joint venture between the Ministry of Information Technology and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The institute offers a diverse range of design courses at various academic levels, including postgraduate and doctorate programs. Notably, it provides a Doctor of Philosophy in Design course. At the postgraduate level, NID Bangalore offers Master of Design courses in seven different specializations.
NID Bangalore holds the prestigious status of an Institute of National Importance and is recognized as one of India’s leading design colleges. It stands proudly in the top three National Institutes of Designing, securing the third spot.

Admissions
At National Institute of Design, Bengaluru, prospective students can pursue a Master of Design (M.Des) degree with a variety of specializations. The admission process at NID Bengaluru is conducted online.
To be eligible for the M.Des program, candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree or a full-time diploma program of at least four years in disciplines such as fine arts, design, or architecture. Alternatively, applicants can qualify with a bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution in any specialization.
The admission process involves clearing the National Institute of Design-Design Aptitude Test (NID-DAT) conducted by NID Bengaluru. Candidates who pass the DAT Prelims will move on to the next stage, DAT Mains, which determines their final selection for the program.
