Founded in 1992 as a separate Centre of TIFR, the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bangalore initially operated within the Molecular Biology Unit at TIFR in Bombay before later relocating to the IISc Campus in Bangalore. Under the leadership of Dr. Obaid Siddiqui, it established its institute laboratories. This move away from Bombay was deemed crucial for fostering independence and escaping the limitations of Colaba, where space and opportunities were scarce. After a brief period at IISc, NCBS settled on its present campus at the University of Agricultural Sciences in 1999, paving the way for groundbreaking opportunities in biological sciences. Admission to NCBS is solely based on merit.
During its five years of existence, NCBS has evolved into a thriving and dynamic institution, boasting over ten active research groups. The Centre has cultivated a robust program for post-graduate teaching and training, welcoming research scholars pursuing a Ph.D. Additionally, it offers a specialized M.Sc. by research program for exceptionally talented Junior Scholars who join after B.Sc. Both Ph.D. and M.Sc. students have the privilege of auditing courses taught at the Indian Institute of Science, with a strong emphasis on independent research. Graduates from NCBS can obtain degrees from esteemed institutions such as Bombay University, Mysore University, or the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
Course, Fees and Eligibility
Admissions
NCBS provides various academic programs related to Biology. They offer a two-year M.Sc. course in Wildlife Biology and Conservation, a maximum five-year Ph.D. program in Biology, and an Integrated Ph.D. course in Biology, which spans a total duration of six years.
To be eligible for admission into the Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs, candidates are required to take the TIFR Nationwide Entrance Examination (GS) for Biology, also known as the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS).
The selection process involves evaluating the candidates’ performance in the written test along with the additional application material submitted. Based on this assessment, candidates are shortlisted for interviews. While the admission process up to the Entrance Test is common for both Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs, separate interviews are conducted for each course.
As for the M.Sc. in Wildlife Biology and Conservation, applicants need to take a separate written test covering general knowledge, analytical and quantitative skills, wildlife biology, and an essay on a conservation issue.
Placements
NCBS placements fall under the umbrella of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Graduates from NCBS have the opportunity to be placed in various prestigious research organizations, including IIIS, BARC, Zoological and Biological research centers, and Institutes.
