Madras Medical College, located in Chennai, has a rich history dating back to 1664 when it began as a small hospital dedicated to treating sick soldiers of the East India Company. The establishment of the British Hospital at Madras was made possible by the efforts of Sir Edward Winter. Over time, the hospital evolved into the Government General Hospital in 1664.
In 1842, Madras Medical College opened its doors to Indian students, and over the next two decades, it flourished with a qualified teaching staff and a comprehensive curriculum. In 1850, it officially became known as Madras Medical College, and in 1857, it became affiliated with the University of Madras. Since 1988, the college has been affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Madras Medical College, Chennai has nine affiliated institutions along with their respective hospitals. The institute is recognized and approved by the Medical Council of India.
In terms of rankings, Madras Medical College, Chennai secured the 16th position in the Medical category in the NIRF 2021 Ranking, with an overall score of 57.88 out of 100. In the previous year, it had achieved the 12th rank in the same category according to the NIRF 2020 ranking. Additionally, as per the NIRF 2020 ranking, the college was placed at the 57th position in the pharmacy category.
