Established in April 1988 as part of the reorganization of India’s forestry research setup, the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) in Coimbatore operates under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). Previously known as the Regional Research Centre, Coimbatore, established in 1959 under the control of the Forest Research Institute & Colleges in Dehradun, IFGTB focuses on national-level research in genetics and tree breeding of significant forest species. It also addresses forestry research challenges specific to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.
Since its inception, IFGTB has been at the forefront of implementing tree improvement programs and precision silviculture to enhance wood and forest product yields while considering climate change concerns. With state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise, the institute has successfully applied biotechnological tools to commercially valuable forestry species.
