Established in 1967, the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Bangalore holds the distinction of being India’s first-ever Horticultural Research Institute. As a subsidiary of ICAR, IIHR is dedicated to research across various horticultural disciplines. The institute provides a Ph.D. program in Horticulture, and admissions are based on a combination of merit scores/rank obtained in an entrance examination and a subsequent interview. Aspiring candidates must hold a relevant PG degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (55% for candidates from reserved categories) to be eligible for Ph.D. admission.

Currently, IIHR, Bangalore comprises 11 well-defined divisions and four sections. These divisions encompass Fruit Crops, Post-Harvest Technology, Ornamental Crops, Plant Pathology, Vegetable Crops, Entomology and Nematology, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Biotechnology, Plant Genetic Resources, Extension, Training, and sections dedicated to Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Seed Science and Technology, Economics and Statistics, and Agricultural Engineering. The institute boasts over 65 purpose-oriented laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, including electron microscopes, ultracentrifuges, LC, HPLC, GLC, and counters, among others.

Admissions

A comprehensive three-year full-time Ph.D. program in Horticulture is offered by the institute. The examination for this program is conducted by the prestigious Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). Aspiring students with a Post Graduation Degree in Plant Pathology are eligible to apply for admission to this program.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research recognized the institute with two prestigious awards: the Best Institute Award and the Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award. As a testament to its academic excellence, IIHR provides a comprehensive three-year full-time Ph.D. program in Horticulture, exclusively available to applicants holding a Post Graduation Degree in Plant Pathology.
