Established in 1786, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Koramangala is a premier institute that focuses on research in astrophysics, astronomy, and related fields of physics. The Institute’s headquarters are located in Koramangala, Bangalore, while its Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST) is situated in the Hosakote campus near Bangalore. The Institute’s origins can be traced back to the Madras Observatory and later, the Kodaikanal Observatory, which has been operating as a fully-fledged solar and stellar observatory since 1899. The Institute has multiple observatories and laboratory networks situated across India, including Kodaikanal, Gauribidanur, Hanle, Kavalur, and Kodaikanal. The Institute is funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.

Admissions

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) provides a full-time research program for students pursuing their PhD degree under the supervision of an IIA faculty member. Additionally, the Institute offers an Integrated M.Tech-PhD (Tech.) program, which admits highly motivated students with a three-year B.Tech. degree. To promote scientific research, IIA conducts an Internship Program open to students from other institutions, universities, and colleges. The Institute also offers various post-doctoral opportunities, including Regular Post-Doctoral Fellowships, Post-Doctoral Researchers, and Chandrasekhar Post-Doctoral Fellowships. Applications for these positions are invited from candidates who hold a Ph.D. degree in Physical/Mathematical Sciences from a recognized university/institute.
