
Established in 1998 by Mr. Sanjeev S. Vakil, a visionary in the field of Maritime Education and Training, Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) in Chennai has emerged as a leading institution. Affiliated with the Indian Maritime University and approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), HIMT holds the distinction of being India’s largest maritime institute, having achieved an Outstanding rating (SMERA Grade 1) for all its courses.
Admission to the institute is based on the IMU-CET conducted by the Indian Maritime University. With a primary focus on providing quality education in the marine sector, HIMT aims to produce highly competent mariners who can excel in the industry. The college offers a wide range of courses, starting from pre-sea training for ratings and officers, to senior officer competency certificates, and advanced courses for all ranks of the Merchant Navy.

Admissions
HIMT provides a range of educational programs, including B.Tech in Marine Engineering, B.Sc. in Nautical Science, as well as several certificate and diploma courses. Admission to the B.Tech and B.Sc. programs is conducted through the IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) administered by the Indian Maritime University.
Candidates who have submitted their IMUCET ranks will be called for a panel interview to assess their communication skills. This will be followed by document verification and a medical test. To be eligible for the B.Tech and B.Sc. degree courses, applicants must have successfully completed their 10+2 or equivalent examination in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) from a recognized board, with a minimum aggregate score of 60%.
For B.Tech (Lateral Entry), candidates must have completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering, securing at least 60% marks. Additionally, the diploma should have a minimum duration of three years, and the candidate should have scored a minimum of 50% marks in English.
For admission into the PG Diploma course, candidates should hold a B.E./B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture, with a minimum of 50% marks. Moreover, they should have attained a minimum of 50% marks in English. As for the ETO (Electro-Technical Officer) course, candidates should have PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) and English as separate subjects, along with a minimum of 50% marks in English in both the 10th and 12th standard examinations.
