Government Kilpauk Medical College, commonly known as GKMC, was established in 1960 and is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is affiliated with Dr. MGR Medical University in Tamil Nadu. The college provides a comprehensive range of medical programs. At the undergraduate level, it offers the MBBS program, while at the postgraduate level, it offers Post Graduate Diplomas, MD, and MS degrees in various specializations. Moreover, GKMC also provides super-specialty programs such as DM and M.Ch in different medical disciplines. Admissions to both undergraduate and postgraduate courses at GKMC are solely based on the scores obtained in the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET). GKMC stands as one of India’s top government medical institutions, known for its excellence in medical education and research.
Admissions
To be eligible for admission to the MBBS course, candidates must have successfully completed their 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognized board. They should have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as their core subjects.
The admission process for the MBBS course is based on the marks obtained in the NEET entrance exam, which is conducted by CBSE.
Candidates who have obtained an MBBS degree or an equivalent qualification are eligible to apply for PG Diploma, MD, and MS courses in various specializations. The selection for these courses is determined by the marks obtained in the NEET-PG examination.
For candidates seeking admission to M.Ch and DM programs, it is mandatory to have an MD/MS degree in the relevant discipline from a recognized university.
The selection process for Super Specialty programs is based on the marks obtained in the NEET-SS examination.
Placements
The college offers an internship facility for its students, although it does not provide direct placement opportunities. However, upon completing the course, students have numerous career options to pursue. They can choose to become medical professors, public health workers, hospital administrators, consultants, physicians, or medical assistants in hospitals and healthcare centers.
Personally, after completing my course, I secured a job as a Medical Assistant in a private hospital. I was pleased to receive an annual salary package of approximately 8 lakh rupees. This job brought me great satisfaction and happiness.
