The Faculty of Horticulture was established in 1971 as part of the formation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). In its inaugural year, the faculty introduced postgraduate and doctoral programs. The undergraduate program, B.Sc. (Horticulture), commenced in 1972 and later shifted to the Horticultural College and Research Institute in Periyakulam in 1990. Initially, upon the university’s formation, departments such as Fruit Crops, Flower Crops and Spices, and Plantation Crops were established. Subsequently, the Department of Vegetable Crops was established in 1979, followed by the Department of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops in 2010. Initially, a common postgraduate and Ph.D. program was offered, but later each department started offering separate programs.

The Horticultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, along with its various departments, focuses on intensive education, research, and extension activities related to fruits, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, floriculture, landscaping, medicinal and aromatic crops. These activities encompass crop improvement, production techniques, and post-harvest management. Notably, the research conducted at the institute has led to the development and release of numerous crop varieties, including 12 fruit crop varieties, 59 vegetable crop varieties, nine spices and plantation crop varieties, nine flower crop varieties, and one medicinal crop variety. Additionally, improved production technologies for various crops have been developed.

In addition to the Faculty of Horticulture in Coimbatore, the Dean (Horticulture) of the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, holds administrative control over several Horticultural Research Stations, including those in Ooty, Yercaud, Palur, and Aliyar (specifically the Coconut Research Station in Veppankulam). They also have technical control over the Regional Research Station in Paiyur, the Agricultural Research Station in Bhavanisagar, and the Tuber Crop Research Station in Yethapur.

Admissions

To be eligible for admission to undergraduate courses, candidates must have completed their 10+2 education in the relevant subject group. The university prepares a final merit list based on the marks obtained by the candidates in the qualifying examination and the subject related to the chosen course. Admission offers are made according to this final rank list. Candidates are required to participate in multiple allotment rounds conducted by the university to secure their seats.

For admission to postgraduate courses, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% marks as per the minimum requirement. Admission to these courses is based on the marks obtained in the university-level entrance test.
Candidates aspiring to pursue a Ph.D. program need to possess a postgraduate degree with a minimum of 60% marks from a recognized university to fulfill the admission criteria.

Placements

The college facilitates the recruitment of students with expertise in plant and tree cultivation through partnerships with various organizations such as FPCs (Farmer Producer Companies), farms, and fertilizer companies. This recruitment process ensures that students with knowledge and skills in plant growth and cultivation are identified and offered employment opportunities. These partnerships provide valuable industry exposure and practical experience to students, enabling them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. By collaborating with these organizations, the college ensures that its students have access to a wide range of career opportunities in the field of plant and tree cultivation.
